25 May 20 May, World Day of the Bees.
Bees and other pollinating insects play a a7> role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystems and in safeguarding biodiversity. Their silent work supports the reproduction of a large proportion of wild plants and contributes directly to production of food worldwide.
It is estimated that around 75% of major agricultural crops benefit from the activity of pollinators, whilst almost 90% of wild flowering plants depend on pollen transfer to complete their life cycle.
Protecting bees therefore means protecting much more than just a single species: it means safeguarding biodiversity, preserving natural habitats and maintaining the balance that sustains ecosystems, forests and resources that are essential to our future.
Today, however, the situation is cause for concern. In Italy, around 22% of the native bee species assessed are threatened with extinction, due to habitat loss, intensive farming, the use of pesticides and the increasingly evident effects of climate change.
Biodiversity is not an abstract concept: it is a complex network of interconnections in which every element counts. When one link is weakened, the whole system suffers.
World Bee Day reminds us of the importance of raising awareness, protecting our environment and adopting more sustainable practices to preserve the natural balance on which we depend every day.
🐝 Tiny allies, a bright future.
